Fleeting Chances

Two gay men took the very brief window of opportunity afforded them by Judge Hanson’s ruling in Iowa yesterday, and married.

Iowa – Two men were married outside a minister’s home in the state’s first legal same-sex wedding Friday morning, less than 24 hours after a judge threw out Iowa’s ban on gay marriage.

It was narrow window of opportunity.

At 11 a.m., after about 20 gay couples had applied for marriage licenses, the Polk County Recorder announced that she had been instructed to stop accepting their applications.

As expected, Hanson’s ruling has now been stayed and is in the limbo we all knew was coming. I expect the appeals process will take awhile, and there will be an eventual decision by the Iowa State Supreme Court.

Quite timely that this is happening now and in Iowa with all the attention on the 2008 race and the caucuses. Maybe an candidate or two will grow some balls and stand up for marriage. I won’t hold my breath.
