…has finally arrived. This would be the internal role not with my current organization.
Some different things have come into play since I last wrote. That potentially in-house manager role? Yeah, about that.
First off, my senior manager, who approached me about it, has not followed up. Not one peep. I’d be happy with a “I haven’t forgotten you, I’m still working on things.” Instead, total radio silence. Now, I know this is a peeve of mine which makes me biased, but do NOT do that. Do not offer something -even without any guarantees attached- then say nothing afterwards. I’d reach out but really, the ball is in his court- I affirmed interest and he hasn’t anything to say since. WTF?
Secondly, my even thinking about said in-house role was contingent upon reporting to my current manager. Who just applied for another job outside of said house. If she takes off, NO WAY would I stay.
So it makes infinitely more sense to take the job I’m being offered and accept that there is no way to stay and make this all work. If she’s looking, things are dire. I’m sad and relieved, all at once. 7 years is a long time, and while my new role overlaps, this is still a departure.
But according to my internal sources elsewhere, getting out now is good- my department’s rep is tanking, and several other folks are leaving. It is not a good day for The Inspector Gadget team.
Congratulations on the offer. The signs seem pretty clear that this is the right move for you. Seven years IS a long time. Just the same, change can be good. Good luck!
Thanks. I’m hoping this works out; they didn’t offer me a differential to cover my OT. Since I’d be going to salary, it’s a big pay cut. I’ve asked if there is room to go up a little and what the expectation is for work/life balance. I’m supposed to talk to the hiring manager tomorrow.
Push hard. Make the case of where you were with all the overtime income and make them justify a salary that is less. We women give up too much when it comes to income. We undersell ourselves.
I am; I sent an analysis with the figures so he could ponder, and we’re due to talk tomorrow afternoon. I also asked for current state work hours for his team; the grapevine says they’re not working atrocious amounts of OT. Part of this is driven by timing; if they give me a raise now, I’d be ineligible for another for about 18mo. So depending on what he says, I may have to suck it up for a few months till review time.
