Out With The Old?

I am such a geek for odd things- for instance, I am total lover of pinball.

Ever since I was a kid, and my parents would bowl in a league together, I would play pinball while they bowled. I grew to love the controlled chaos of the machines, the way the ball would slam against the glass sometimes. I always hoped to see one break, but never did. And that’s a good thing. I like my eyesight, after all.

I don’t get a chance to play much, anymore, but when I do I totally love it. Which is why this article makes a little sad.

We have a cool place or two here in Seattle to play, like Shorty’s. Closer to home we have Full Tilt.

I need to raid the piggy bank for some quarters and go play. Just because.

Heh…you mentioned a piggy bank on the same day that I posted a picture of my “moo cow” bank!

Hey – didja ever see the movie “Tilt” with Brooke Shields and Charles Durning?

My nephews, now grown, have an old pinball machine that’s still at my sister’s house. I love it.

Ha, David- that is a great bank! I have a piggy bank that is shaped like a pig but looks like a soccer ball. :) I *think* I may have seen Tilt, but it was ages ago.

What’s the pinball at your sister’s house, Trop? I never had a favorite machine, they’re all fun to me.

Does that mean you will visit me at TRB? You know their lunchroom has one…

Ha! Really? I could be persuaded to take a shuttle down there. :)

  6. Pinball isn’t odd! Just some of the people who play them!

It’s not dead either! Well, maybe as a commercial product it is, but there’s a healthy supply of events, leagues and meets out there for nostalgic enthusiasts, and some great people on the newsgroups! Count yourself lucky you’re in the US, over in the UK there’s hardly any arcades with machines left and just one major show a year – I should know, I organise the damn thing!

Hey Nick- thanks for stopping by.

Pinball isn’t odd, but it is something of a niche and is definitely looked on by some as odd. That’s really what I meant.

And hopefully it will continue on for a long time, I’d hate to see such a cool medium disappear. One major show a year in the UK? I imagine it’s hell to organize- good on ya for being the standard-bearer!
